This is a full semester, 3-credit studio course at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. There is no prerequisite for this class. It will familiarize students with the development of Western calligraphy from Roman capitals through present day trends in the lettering arts. Students will learn to differentiate between major historical styles through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on studio assignments.
The first half of the course focuses on learning skills of pencil line and letterform drawing and using broad-edged pens to write the Italic hand, or another major historical hand – Foundational or Uncial - based on student interest and previous lettering and drawing experience.
During the second half of the course students will use their skills to produce at least two finished projects – usually a broadside (piece suitable for framing) and a collaborative book - depending on class interest and progress.
